FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q1. What is Thermal insulation?
A1. Thermal Insulation is the reduction of heat transfer from one medium to other. Heat is transferred from hot to cold area either by Conduction, Convection or Radiation. Thermal Insulator is a material, which act as barrier in heat transfer from insulated area to another area.

Q2. What is the purpose of thermal insulation?
A2. The purpose of thermal insulation in buildings is to maintain a comfortable and hygienic indoor environment. The main aim of thermal insulation in summer & winter is energy conservation leading to a decrease in cooling / heating demand and hence the protection of the environment. This aim has to be considered in new buildings as well as in renovating the old buildings. In other words, the purpose of thermal insulation is to conserve energy and for living comforts.

Q3. Which is the best insulation material to use?
A3. There are many insulating materials like Rockwool, Glasswool, PUR, Expandable Polystyrene, Extruded Polystyrene (XPS), etc. INSUboard – Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) is a rigid foam board having closed cell structure and is produced in a fully automated continuous extrusion process in accordance with international specification and standards. It insulates and protects buildings from extreme temperatures and moisture conditions. Its unique properties of high comprehensive strength and low water absorption makes it an ideal insulating material for foundations, walls, roofs and floors. INSUboard is light weight, so it is easy to handle, fabricate and install at various applications in buildings.

Q4. Why INSUboard as Thermal Insulation?
A4.
INSUboard does not absorb moisture due to it’s closed cell structure and hence retains it’s insulation properties, throughout the life of the building.

Following points makes INSUboard the best thermal insulation material:

  • Thermal Comfort: Cool in summer & warm in winter.
  • Saves Energy: Significant reduction in energy consumption, due to prevention of heat penetration from one area to another.
  • Save Money: Energy saved is money saved.
  • Social Responsibility: Lower energy consumption leads to lower emission of pollutants and greenhouse gases. INSUboard produced from polystyrene and blowing agents does not contains no harmful substances, ( free from HCFC and CFC) hence is safer for environment and also contribute towards green building programs  in a variety of points and categories.

             •   Perfect for exterior & interior insulation.
             •   Perfect for new construction or do-it-yourself renovation.

Q6. How long will it take to recover the cost of insulation or What is the Pay back period ?
A6. Different homes have different payback period, this depends on many variable factors, but average ROI comes within a period of 3 years, and it can fluctuate.

Also, payback period is applicable only in case the insulated area is also air-conditioned. For many cases, Wall Insulation does not need air-conditioning at all.

Q7. After how much time, do I need to replace the insulation material?
A7. Once INSUboard is installed in walls or on roof, it will remain there for the entire life of the building.

Q8. Is it a Green product ?
A8: INSUboard is approved by GRIHA for Under deck, Over deck & Wall Insulation. It is approved by NCCD for Cold storages and also we are active Member of IGBC-Indian Green Building Council.

Q9: Critical areas where INSUboard should be installed?
A9: For best result INSUboard should be used on all the exterior walls & roof. But to reduce cost, at least INSUboard should be applied on sun facing walls & roofs.

Q10. What finishes are possible after application of INSUboard?
A10. INSUboard in partition walls can be sandwiched between gypsum, plyboards, cement boards or any other finishing material. It can been inserted between two brick walls to create cavity wall insulation system. In Underdeck Insulation & Wall Insulation, it can be finished with polymerized cement mortar to give a regular plaster finish and with Pre cast Tiles or Cement Screed finish above over deck insulation applications.

Q11. Are there any finished product which can be installed immediately to save time and hassles of Civil work?
A11. Yes, we have INSUtile for roof, which can be directly placed over the existing roof and can be used as as regular roof. (Both New and Old roof). For walls, we have EIFS which is a total system for Exterior Insulation and Finishing where our INSUBOARD can be directly fixed over existing wall and finished with desired paint or texture finish.

Q12. Is INSUboard fire retardant?
A12. Yes, INSUboard is fire retarted & self extinguishing when heat source is taken away. Like other organic substances, INSUboard is combustible. If there is no direct flame source, INSUboard is not self-ignitable. INSUboard are made flame retardant to meet building and fire safety codes by adding suitable FR additive, which delays the process of burning and resists propagation of flames.

When exposed to a small flame, the FR XPS will melt at the point of contact. If the contact with the external flame stops, it self extinguishes without further burning, it will not propagate the fire. INSUBOARD will comply with DIN 4102, Part 1 Class B2 requirements and we also manufacture FR Class B1 against specific requirements.

Q13. Do they release poisonous gases on burning?
A13. INSUboard is manufactured using Polystyrene which is an organic material. The effects of combustion from XPS are not more acutely toxic than the effects of combustion from common building materials such as wood.

Q14. Can INSUboard be left exposed to open atmosphere?
A14. No. INSUboard is inert in nature & unaffected by the normal atmospheric conditions. Due to its low water absorption INSUboard needs no measures to prevent it from water. But in flat roof application for example, protection from solar radiation is required. Exposure to direct UV radiation cause surface irregularities and discoloration., In practice, INSUboard therefore has to be covered with protective layers, lamination, etc. to protect from long-term radiation exposure and also wind forces.

Q15. How different is XPS than Thermocol ?
A15. Thermocol was the brand name of one company for EPS (Expanded Polystyrene). EPS is manufactured by beads molding process and the foam beads are fused together using steam and pressure to manufacture blocks and sheets of desired thicknesses are cut from these blocks.

INSUboard is XPS (Extruded Polystyrene), manufactured by continuous extrusion process produces. A homogeneous closed cell matrix with each cell fully enclosed by polystyrene walls. The polystyrene granules are melted and the homogeneous molten mass is foamed using blowing agents and sheets are extruded. Thus we get closed cell structure, with improved mechanical properties and water resistance as compared to EPS.

Actually, the extrusion process is the most important difference between EPS and XPS and it results in one of the most important performance difference which is water absorption. Open cell leading to water absorption / retention in case of EPS.

Both XPS and EPS are manufactured using polystyrene which is a hydrophobic polymer that repels water.

Q16. What is the application procedure ?
A16. The application procedure of INSUboard vary depending upon the surface and nature of application. In Over Deck applications, INSUboard is used on the roof or terraces from the upper side. Boards are laid in staggered pattern over the waterproofing system, then covered with geo-textile fabric before giving the desired final finish of tiles, screed etc.

In Under Deck applications, the boards are fixed below the roof or ceiling of the building. This can be done by suspending the boards using the regular frame structure as is done in false ceiling applications. Boards can also be Mechanically fastened directly to the ceiling and later on covered with putty & paint or can be finished with polymerized mortar to give regular plaster finish.

In External & Internal Wall insulation applications, the boards are fixed to walls using adhesive modified mortar and PVC fasteners. Glass Fibre mesh is fixed to the boards using thin coat of cement adhesive mortar and final quote again is done with cement adhesive mortar. For final finish, any paint can be used which should
be solvent free and water based.

For detailed description of application procedure, please contact our authorized representatives.

Q17. Why should I consider EIFS system ?
A17. Up to 35% energy of cooling in home escapes through the walls. External wall insulation significantly reduces this cooling loss, leading to a reduction in monthly energy bills. External Wall Insulation systems also protect the building structure, prevent deterioration, and overcome thermal bridging and condensation problems.
